Hi and welcome to the web site of the North Carolina American Water Works Association and the North Carolina Water Environment Association (NC AWWA-WEA). Our Association is a combined organization of water professionals affiliated with the American Water Works Association and wastewater professionals affiliated with the Water Environment Federation. The NC AWWA-WEA is a volunteer association dedicated to providing water and wastewater education, training, and service in an effort to protect public health and the environment. We have over 3,000 members in North Carolina representing municipal and private utilities, consulting engineering firms, government agencies, companies who provide equipment and supplies to the industry and representatives of academia who teach and conduct research in water and wastewater-related areas. We are very lucky to have an organization that has, for 86 years, been able to look at water quality issues from a broad perspective, realizing that water and wastewater issues sometimes go beyond the end of the pipe.

In this section Steve Shoaf, the 2007-2008 Chair of the NC AWWA-WEA Board of Trustees, will share his thoughts on issues related to the water and wastewater industry, and the Association.
May 5, 2008 Time is a constant in that it is constantly changing. Several Association events have already occurred and are worth mentioning even though they are now past. Although I am pointing out some events, this in no way detracts from the committee meetings, seminars, and volunteer efforts that I simply do not have room to mention. Every month of the year we are sponsoring training events built on the hard work of volunteers and staff (see our Training Events calendar on the website and in a mailbox near you). In January the Board of Trustees voted on the new work plan and budget for the Association. Both were adopted, clearing the way for implementation of Association work for 2008. This was the first year that the Finance Committee was presented a balanced budget by the Executive Director, and that sped up the budget deliberations. The committee work plans for 2008 were adopted with only some minor revisions.(Financial report is available on the About & History page and Committee Reports are available from the Committees page.) In February NC AWWA-WEA hosted the regional meetings for both AWWA (AWWA RMSO) and WEF (WEFMAX). The meetings were held jointly in Asheville with about 80 attendees representing about 19 organizations. As host, our volunteers and staff spent long hours making sure that the details were taken care of and the schedule of events flowed with little down time. The work sessions covered issues of leadership, funding, training, communications (publications), staffing, and many more topics. The opportunity to network with officers and staff from other sections and member associations (many are not joint associations like ours) was valuable for all attendees. |
