Welcome to the main page of the NC Safewater Endowment Fund!

The NC Safewater Endowment Program plans to award a total of $19,000 is scholarships and grants in 2018.

 

Scholarships are available for community college and university students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as for educators at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

 

The One AWWA Operator Scholarship can be used by operations professionals for certification/licensure, two-year water related associate degree, technical school program, professional training program, books and manuals, and operator related conferences.

 

Individual scholarships are listed below along with a very brief qualification statement. To view a scholarship's complete qualifications and application criteria refer to the Scholarship Description PDF listed under each scholarship heading.


Applications for Educator and University/Community College Scholarships for the 2018-2019 academic year were due March 22, 2018.

 

The secondary application deadline for One AWWA Operator Scholarships is June 29, 2018.


Selection Criteria

The NC AWWA-WEA Scholarship Selection Committee will evaluate each application carefully and consider the following criteria:

  • The quality and completeness of the application
  • The qualifications of the applicant
  • Content of the essay based upon requirements of each individual scholarship.
  • Recommendation of instructors
  • Other information requested in the application based upon requirements of individual scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded without regard to race, creed, color, sex, age or national origin.
 

Scholarship Selection Committee

A NC AWWA-WEA Scholarship Selection Committee of knowledgeable community leaders (a majority of whom shall not be members or employees of NC AWWA-WEA) who are committed to environmental and water resource education will then evaluate applications for merit and award. Eligibility and awards are determined at the sole discretion of the Scholarship Selection Committee. All decisions made by the Scholarship Selection Committee are final and are not subject to appeal. Applications will be screened for form and relevance.

One AWWA Operator Scholarship – $500

One AWWA Operator Scholarship Description (PDF)

  • Applicant must be a current water operator or seeking to enter the water operator profession.
  • Applicant must be pursuing an Operator’s License or Certification, two or four-year degree related to the water operator profession, or professional development.
  • Applicant must reside or work within the geographical boundaries covered by the NC Section.
  • Scholarship awards can be used for certification/licensure, two-year water related associate degree, technical school program, professional training program, books and manuals, and operator related conferences.
  • Each scholarship recipient will receive a one-year AWWA Operator membership.

Educator Scholarships

Raftelis Environmental Education Grant - $2,500

Raftelis Environmental Education Grant Description (PDF)

  • The scholarship program focuses on funding competitive financial awards to elementary or middle school educators that have as a major objective, educating elementary or middle school students on clean water and environmental preservation.
  • The amount of the scholarship will depend on the cost of the project(s) selected.  The total amount available to be awarded in 2018 is $2,500.The recipient may qualify for more than one year but must reapply for each year.
  • The scholarship may be applied toward expenses for educational materials (books & videos), travel for field trips, building materials specific to a project, enrollment fees for water related short courses for educators or prizes for competitions.

The Carol Bond Fund Community College Students Scholarship - $2,500

Carol Bond Fund Community College Students Scholarship Description (PDF)

  • Student must be pursuing a degree in environmental sciences or environmental education at a community college in North Carolina during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Student must have a minimum GPA of 2.75.
  • Student must be a US citizen.
  • The scholarship will be awarded for one year only.  A recipient is eligible to apply for the scholarship for each subsequent year until they graduates.

University and College Scholarships

The Les and Elaine Hall Water Environment Stewardship Fund Scholarship - $1,000

Les and Elaine Hall Water Environmental Stewardship Fund Scholarship Description (PDF)

  • Student must be a rising junior and must have maintained a GPA of greater than 3.0.
  • Student must be studying engineering with a concentration in the water environment in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum at one of the UNC Campuses during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Student must be a US citizen and a resident of North Carolina.
  • The scholarship may be awarded annually to the recipient through their Junior and Senior years and for up to two years of postgraduate studies in the water environment, as long as they continue to meet the qualifications stipulated.

Raftelis Financial Consultants Environmental Finance and Management Fund Scholarship – $1,000

  • Student must be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree with a concentration in environmental finance, environmental management, or related disciplines, in an accredited institution of higher learning during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Student must have maintained a GPA of greater than 3.0.
  • Student must be a US citizen.
  • The scholarship will be awarded annually to the student through the completion of their undergraduate degree and/or graduate degree as long as he/she continues to meet the qualifications stipulated in the initial award of the scholarship.

GHD Clean Water Fund Scholarship - $1,000

  • Student must be a graduate student studying civil or environmental engineering with a concentration in water or wastewater in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum at a North Carolina University during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Student must have maintained a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
  • Student must be a US citizen and a resident of North Carolina.
  • Scholarship can be continued through completion of graduate studies as long as the recipient meets the qualifications stipulated.

The Crowder Construction Company Scholarship – $1,000

  • Applicant must be a full-time student during the 2018-19 academic year who is a rising junior or senior in a degree program.  At application student must provide transcript showing GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Scholarship is renewable up to 2 years total as an undergraduate.
  • Applicant must have a goal to utilize his/her degree in the area of water resources construction. Student must be pursuing a degree at an accredited college with a concentration in a construction related program such as: construction management, construction science, construction technology or engineering with an emphasis in construction. 
  • Student must be a US citizen and a resident of North Carolina.

The Lynn and Lars Balck Water Environmental Stewardship Fund - $2,000

  • Student must be a rising junior pursuing a degree in engineering with a concentration in the water environment in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum at one of the UNC campuses during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Applicant must have a minimum 3.00 GPA
  • Student must be a US citizen and a resident of North Carolina.
  • The scholarship may be renewed annually through two years of post-graduate school degree study as long as the recipient continues to satisfy the requirements stipulated.

Rivers & Associates, Inc. Clean Water Education Fund - $1,000

Rivers & Associates, Inc. Clean Water Education Fund Scholarship Description (PDF)

  • Student must be a rising junior in an ABET accredited engineering curriculum at any of the Campuses of the UNC system in the 2018-2019 academic year maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Scholarship may be renewed through two years of post-graduate degree study as long as the student maintains a GPA greater than or equal to 3.0.
  • Student must reside in any of the 35 counties located northeast of the following NC counties, inclusive: Warren, Franklin, Wake, Johnston, Wayne, Duplin, Pender, and New Hanover.
  • Student must be a US citizen.

The Environmental Manufacturer’s Representative Scholarship Fund Scholarship – $1,500

  • Student must be studying engineering with a concentration in the water/wastewater environment at one of the UNC campuses during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Candidates for scholarships shall be required to show interest in the Manufacturer’s Representative role in the water industry by requiring them to visit with a NC Manufacturer’s Rep firm for one 8-hour day and demonstrate an interest in environmental sales and marketing by taking electives in that area and/or performing an internship with a Manufacturer’s Rep Firm in their Junior and/or Senior year.
  • Student must maintain a GPA of 2.75 or greater.  This is a multi-year scholarship that can be renewed through their senior year if the student continues to meet the qualifications stipulated.
  • Student must be a US citizen and a resident of North Carolina.

  • Student must be pursuing a degree in a curriculum that emphasizes the protection of public health by providing healthful drinking water and/or protecting the quality and integrity of the water environment at an institution of higher education located in North Carolina during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Student must maintain a GPA of 3.0.
  • Student must be a United States citizen.
  • Once the scholarship is awarded to a student, they are eligible to receive it annually, for a maximum of four years to complete their undergraduate degree and/or for a maximum of two years to complete their graduate degree as long as they continue to meet the qualifications stipulated in the initial award.

  • Student must be pursuing a degree in a curriculum that emphasizes the protection of public health by providing healthful drinking water and/or protecting the quality and integrity of the water environment at an institution of higher education located in North Carolina during the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Student must maintain a GPA of 3.0.
  • Student must be a United States citizen.
  • Once the scholarship is awarded to a student, they are eligible to receive it annually, for a maximum of four years to complete their undergraduate degree and/or for a maximum of two years to complete their graduate degree as long as they continue to meet the qualifications stipulated in the initial award.
