Awards Council

In 2011 all of the formerly separate awards committees were consolidated under the umbrella of the general Awards Committee. Each award-specific subcommittee will be responsible for selecting the recipients for that award.

Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovelers (5-S) Subcommittee

The purpose of the North Carolina Select Society of Sanitary Sludge Shovelers shall be the betterment of the NC Water Environment Association and the promotion of its objectives. Selection for membership will be considered a high honor, consistent with other Association awards and will recognize long and faithful service to the Association.

Arthur Sidney Bedell Award Subcommittee

Organization
The Arthur Sidney Bedell Award Committee shall be appointed by the Association Chair and shall consist of the three recipients of the award. The first of the three members to receive the award becomes the Chair.

Primary Activities
This Committee should meet promptly after appointment and, in any event, must submit its report, including the citation, to the Secretary by August 1 each year. The citation covering this award shall be limited to not more than fifty (50) words. It is specifically emphasized that the conferring of an award is in no sense mandatory and should be made only after careful deliberation and when it is the opinion of the Committee that an outstanding member of the Association qualifies for the award. The name of the award recipient will not be divulged until formally announced during the Annual meeting.

Organization
The committee shall be appointed by the Chair and shall consist of the Chairs of the following committees: Collection & Distribution Schools Committee, Seminars & Workshops Committee, Wastewater Treatment Operators Schools Committee. The Chair of this committee shall rotate annually among the Chairs of the listed committees, beginning with the first committee listed.

Primary Activities
This committee shall report to the Secretary each year that a recipient has been selected. This committee will function each year.

Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Excellence Award Subcommittee

Organization
The committee is made up of the last three recipients of the award.

Primary Activities
The committee will choose the recipient of the award each year by August 1. Criteria:

  • The candidate must be employed at an educational facility laboratory, industrial laboratory, municipal laboratory or commercial laboratory that performs wastewater related analysis and must have direct analytical responsibilities.
  • Candidates are eligible for this award once only.
  • Selection criteria include:
    • Membership and involvement in professional associations, for example, WEA committees, Standard Methods joint task groups, WEA conferences, etc.
    • Outstanding efforts in the area of wastewater and environmental aquatic analysis, including such items as innovative sampling techniques or solutions to a treatment, analytical or environmental problem.
    • Involvement in community activities or public relations.
    • Presentations at professional conferences, meetings, etc. relevant to water quality analysis.
    • Professional certifications.
    • Continuing education.
    • Beneficial contributions to the candidate’s facility.
    • Unusual initiative or performance “beyond the call of duty” in the area of wastewater analysis or environmental matters.
