Purpose & Classes Offered

The objective of these schools is to REVIEW the basic concepts in the proper operation and maintenance of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. The curriculum will provide information that should be helpful in preparing a participant for the voluntary certification exam in Meter Technician and the mandatory certification exams in Water Distribution, Backflow, and Wastewater Collection.

Schools includes course programs in:

Advanced Collection Systems – Contact Hours: 6.0, Class Day: Monday

Advanced Distribution Systems – Contact Hours: 6.0, Class Day: Tuesday

Shoring – Contact Hours: 6.0, Class Day: Tuesday

Backflow/Cross-Connection (Class size very limited. May not be offered at all schools) – Contact Hours: 25.0, Class Days: Monday-Friday

Collections I, II, III, & IV – Contact Hours: 17.0, Class Days: Wednesday-Friday

Distribution A, B, & C –
Contact Hours: 18.0, Class Days: Wednesday-Friday

Meter Technician
(Will not be offered at the Coastal School) – Contact Hours: 15.0, Class Days: Wednesday-Friday

Distribution D
(In 2015 this class will only be offered at the Eastern School.) – Contact Hours: 12.0, Class Days: Thursday-Friday

Those pursuing Distribution should be aware that Distribution-D is traditionally intended for persons who work at VERY small systems that are designated at the D or C level. Before deciding which level of Distribution to begin with, review the Rules Governing Water Operators (Subchapter 18D Section .0200) to verify exam requirements. Once you obtain your distribution certification, you must maintain your current level for one full year before you are eligible to take the exam for the next level. If you have any questions about the rules or exam qualifications contact the NCWTFOCB at (919) 733-0379.

Study Materials

It is highly recommended that students refer to the Bookstore page and have access to the books that correspond to their class.

As of January 1, 2013, NC AWWA-WEA is no longer fulfilling book orders by shipment. School attendees may use the form available with registration materials to order their books in advance and pick them up at the school. Depending on inventory, there may be a limited number of books available for purchase at the school. If you would like to purchase books from another source  you may download a spreadsheet of books and potential vendors (current as of 1/2/13).

Please note, the appropriate Needs To Know Manual for each course is included in the registration fee and students will receive their manual when they arrive at school. Needs To Know Manuals are also available at http://www.ncsafewater.org/resources_/for_industry_professionals/bookstore/, and may be downloaded for free.
