What Do We Do?
In 2005 the collection systems committee proposed to the Board to add distribution systems to the committee scope. Thus we became the Wastewater Collections and Distribution Systems Committee. There are certain events we sponsor in addition to working jointly with other NC AWWA-WEA committees and the Board. Bi-monthly meetings are held to organize such events and to share information on important water and sewer topics including systems operation and maintenance and the regulatory climate affecting operators and their employer.
This committee is most known for organizing topics and speakers for the Advanced Collection and Distribution Workshops held the Monday and Tuesday of the eastern and western operator certification schools. However we had a wonderful opportunity to work in conjunction with the Governmental Affairs Committee to sponsor a one-day seminar on sewer capacity. This well-attended seminar was held in March 2008 in Raleigh.
We also alternate water and sewer discussion topics at each bi-monthly committee meeting. At which, formal presentations are given by product representatives or those well informed on the selected water or sewer topic. Past presentations have been on leak detection (City of Raleigh), SSO reporting (City of Greensboro), water distribution O&M program (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities), hydrogen sulfide in sewers, waterline rehabilitation, FOG program (City of Wilson), root control, automated meter reading, the national WEF collections systems committee, and Water 2030 among several others.

It was the recommendation of the NC AWWA-WEA Wastewater Collection & Water Distribution Committee to the NC AWWA-WEA Board of Trustees to adopt the Golden Manhole Society as part of the North Carolina American Water Works Association and Water Environment Association (NC AWWA-WEA).
