Saltwater Intrusion on Coastal Aquifers: A Case Study in Hilton Head, SC - Dr. Richard Spruill
Saltwater Intrusion in coastal aquifer systems is rapidly becoming a major water resource issue in Atlantic Coastal Plain States. One of the most serious problems is the rapid movement of the saltwater interface in the Upper Floridian Aquifer beneath Hilton Head Island, SC. Large-scale withdrawals at Savannah, GA have caused a reversal of the hydraulic gradient, and salty water from Port Royal Sound is now moving rapidly through the Upper Floridian Aquifer towards Savannah. The rate of saltwater migration may be as high as 150 to 200 feet per year. Water supply wells on Hilton Head Island are being adversely affected by the intrusion of sea water into the aquifer.
It is generally agreed that the intrusion cannot be stopped, so several remedial actions are being implemented. For example, pumping schedules have been modified, new aquifers have been developed, and membrane plants are being utilized to treat salty water from deeper aquifers. Examples of saltwater intrusion in other coastal areas of NC and SC will be discussed, along with mitigation techniques designed to slow the migration of the salty water.
Dr. Spruill received his B.S. and M.S.in Geology from East Carolina University, and his Ph.D. in Geology from UNC Chapel Hill. He is currently an Associate Professor at East Carolina University and co-owner of Groundwater Management Associates, Inc.
