Short description of event/topics covered

Topic: Microtunneling & Conventional Utility Tunneling in North Carolina

Between 1993 and 2019, Bradshaw Construction has constructed over 20 tunnel projects in North Carolina covering at total distance of more than four miles and ranging in size from 42 inches to as large as 13 feet. Tunneling methods included using various hand-mining techniques, conventional tunnel boring machines and microtunneling. The tunnels have been supported by everything from liner plates and shotcrete to steel casing and RCP installed by pipe jacking. North Carolina geology at water & sewer pipeline elevations is a complicated mix of hard rock and alluvial deposits, where multiple geologic units are encountered in any given tunnel. The presentation will try to illuminate a contractor’s perspective on the planning and execution of these tunnel projects.
