Bryan Odom: Face-to-face with the Value of the NC Safewater Endowment

I’ve come face-to-face with the value of the NC Safewater Endowment and what it means for the future of clean water in our state.

For the last several years I’ve had the pleasure and honor to speak about engineering ethics with each of the NC State Environmental Engineering senior design classes – a key group of the upcoming water and wastewater professionals in North Carolina. I always leave my time with these energetic and bright individuals encouraged about the next generation of leaders that will innovate and create the solutions to protect our most valuable natural resource. Speaking with these students means returning to the very same classroom where I finished my own college studies and it’s comforting to know that that shared experienced stretches across multiple generations.

As the father of a daughter who is set to begin her college experience this fall, and two more that will follow close behind the first, I’ve quickly realized that the cost of one year of college for these environmental engineering students is roughly equivalent to 2 or 3 years of my own college studies.

The scholarships that the NC Safewater Endowment provides are critical to enticing and retaining the best and brightest students. My participation in the NC Safewater Endowment is an investment in the future of our profession and a commitment to sustaining clean water resources for future generations.
