Academy: Ladders, Collection & Distribution Systems

 

The Academy for Water Professional Development is a initiative of the Association to fill an industry training gap and advance the careers of participants. The program includes multi-year technical and soft-skill training courses, which have been developed based on input from industry leaders across North Carolina.

LEVEL: Apprentice

Prerequisites

Collections Track: Must currently hold or be able to obtain the Collections 1 certification issued by the NCWPCSOCC.

 

Distribution Track: Must currently hold or be able to obtain the D Distribution certification issued by the NCWTFOCB. C Distribution can be substituted for D Distribution when the D Distribution level was skipped.

Introduction to basic health/safety concepts and practices such as first aid, blood borne pathogens, CPR, Right to Know and hazards in the workplace.

Support System Awareness
 3 Introduction to support systems. Introduction to Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
Systems (SCADA), Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are some good examples of the support systems used by the
water industry.

Foundations of Employee Conduct
 3 Introduction to the importance of public service, how employees should conduct themselves in the workplace. Embracing diversity and mutual respect for others.    2017 schedule to be announced.
Customer Service 1
 3 Introduction to the basics of and reasoning for good customer service. How to identify customer needs and deliver outstanding service. How to practice effective verbal communication.   2017 schedule to be announced.
Utilities Construction Skills - Level 1
 6 Introduction to construction and repair techniques for water and sewer assets. Course includes materials of construction and technology applications that help a technician understand the repair options and the impacts of each.   2017 schedule to be announced.

LEVEL: Journeyman 1

Prerequisites:

Collections Track: Must currently hold or be able to obtain the Collections 2 certification issued by the NCWPCSOCC AND successful completion of the Collections Apprentice level. Must be in good standing with previous Academy level.

 

Distribution Track: Must currently hold or be able to obtain the C Distribution certification issued by the NCWPCSOCC AND successful completion of the Distribution Apprentice level. Must be in good standing with previous Academy level.

Work Zone Traffic Control for Supervisors
6 This course prepares students to design and implement work zone traffic control measures consistent with the NCDOT manual for work zone safety.

Supervision & Leadership Skills
 6 This course will provide basic supervision skills geared towards all new supervisors. Topics will include preparing and delivering performance appraisals, delivering disciplinary actions, and communications skills for supervisors.   2017 schedule to be announced.
Conflict Management Skills - Verbal Judo
 2 This course is an extension of the previous employee conduct class from the Apprentice level. Topics are further developed to include conflict avoidance techniques for de-escalating conflict situations.   2017 schedule to be announced.
Customer Service 2  2 This course is a continuation of the Customer Service 1 course. Students will benefit from role playing and have first-hand opportunities to develop enhanced customer service delivery techniques.   2017 schedule to be announced.
Environmental Awareness

This course is intended to educate the field supervisor about environmental controls and regulations regarding wetlands, stream buffers, erosion control
measures, and surface water quality issues encountered in operating and maintaining collection and distribution systems.

NIMS ICS Tabletop Exercise
3 Attendees will participate in a tabletop exercise to practice and refine their familiarity with NIMS / ICS and their role a simulated disaster response in a water / wastewater utility.  Each participant will be assigned a role in the ICS structure of a hypothetical utility.  The exercise will be preceded by a brief review of ICS and followed by an exercise hot-wash, a test, and a wrap-up discussion.

LEVEL: Journeyman 2

Prerequisites:

Collections Track: Must currently hold or be able to obtain the Collections 3 certification issued by the NCWPCSOCC AND successful completion of the Collections Journeyman 1 level. Must be in good standing with previous Academy level.

 

Distribution Track: Must currently hold or be able to obtain the B Distribution certification issued by the NCWTFOCB AND successful completion of the Distribution Journeyman 1 level. Must be in good standing with previous Academy level.

OSHA 10 Hour Class (Construction) for Supervisors
10 Follows the template for OSHA approved 10 hour curriculum in CFR 1926 standards.

Construction Inspection Processes
6 This course provides instruction on basic construction inspection techniques, including soil compaction, proper construction techniques, job site restoration, and managing property owner complaints.   2017 schedule to be announced.
Supervision/Leadership 2
6 This course provides instruction on skills related to good interview practices, what can and can’t be asked in an interview, how to appraise a prospective employee fairly and legal requirements for appropriate practices for hiring and firing of employees.   2017 schedule to be announced.
Business Writing

This course provides basic instruction related to generating professional correspondence such as memos, letters, etc.   2017 schedule to be announced.
Problem Solving and Decision Making

Covers basic critical thinking skill sets.   2017 schedule to be announced.
 Public Speaking 2
 2 Prepares students to make presentations to civic clubs, and other formal type presentations.   2017 schedule to be announced.
 Trenching and Shoring Competent Person
 6 This course provides instruction for supervisors intending to manage crews requiring a competent person for the supervision of trenching jobs.   2017 schedule to be announced.
 CMMS Systems
 3 This course provides an overview of how CMMS work order management systems can be used to manage work and collect operation data to measure productivity, efficiency, and provide asset management data collection.   2017 schedule to be announced.
 ISO 14001 and EMS Systems Awareness
 3 This course provides an overview of the purpose of and general requirements of Environmental Management Systems.   2017 schedule to be announced.

This course provides instruction on how to comply with NC General Statutes regarding procurement and purchasing for local governments and related public agencies.   2017 schedule to be announced.

Senior Completion Project
 6 This credit requires that the enrollee complete either a research project, present a topic at an approved NC AWWA-WEA event or complete a “service project” geared towards the advancement of their professional education and for the benefit of the industry. Service project would require a written report. A job shadowing project may even be
utilized in an effort to make the student understand the big picture of the utility.
