2019 Recipient:Greenville Utilities Commission

 2019 Recipient: Greenville Utilities Commission

As members of the GUC Team, employees are empowered to protect themselves and others from exposure to hazards.  Leadership is committed to minimizing employee risks.  Together, employees can manage all exposures to make zero injuries a reality.

From Crew Leader to General Manager, all leaders at GUC are performing Safety Contacts and investing in relationships that foster safe work and communication.  Over 280 Safety Contacts are initiated and documented by leaders throughout the organization every month.  This is in addition to the 3,300 annual Peer to Peer Observations that are simultaneously happening.  Annually, there are over 6,000 intentional conversations happening in the organization to ensure safe work.  GUS has evolved from a “Transactional” Safety Culture based on policy and procedure to a “Transformational” culture built on relationships and open communication.

This award was established in 1982 in honor of George W. Burke, Jr. for his many years of service both to the

water pollution control field and the Federation as staff manager of technical services. Mr. Burke was instrumental in developing the Federation’s annual safety survey and assisting in the production of several safety training aids and promotional packets.

The purpose of this award is to encourage an active and effective safety program in municipal and industrial wastewater facilities, and to stimulate the collecting and reporting of injury data. The documented and illustrated safety program and safety record of the facility for the preceding calendar year are the primary criteria for the award. In addition, each Member Association is allowed full freedom to establish its own criteria.
