Walter J. Courmon Safety Award

2018 Recipient: City of Morganton Water Treatment Plant

2018 Recipient:City of Morganton Water Treatment Plant

The City of Morganton Water Treatment Plant has a number of plans and programs that reinforce their dedication to safety.  The municipality has a safety committee that meets monthly to discuss incidents that have occurred and ways to prevent them in the future.  They aim to prevent accidents from occurring through eliminating hazards, training employees, and safety inspections.  Employees take safety classes on a regular basis to stress the importance of safety in the workplace.  The plant has safety programs in place for electrical, first aid and CPR, and fire extinguisher.  They also have, among others, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, and risk management programs.  An environment is created where employees are comfortable bringing safety concerns to their supervisors or safety committee members with the assurance that they will be swiftly addressed.  If there is an accident or near miss incident, a report is filed that is reviewed at several levels.  The water treatment plant has not had a lost time or restricted duty incident in 19 years!

This award was established February 05, 2002 upon request of the NC AWWA-WEA Safety Committee in honor of Walter J. Courmon for his many years of service to NC AWWA-WEA. Walt was last employed as Water Resources Safety Specialist with the City of Greensboro.

The purpose of this award is to encourage an active and effective safety program in municipal and industrial water facilities, and to stimulate the collecting and reporting of injury data. The documented and illustrated safety program and safety records of the facility for the preceding calendar year are the primary criteria for the award. The NC AWWA-WEA Risk Management Committee makes the selection for this award.
