Educational Opportunities

Our training programs are a critical piece in fulfilling our mission to provide water education, training, and leadership to protect public health and the environment. By educating water and wastewater professionals, we are equipping them with the knowledge they need to provide clean drinking water, safely collect and treat wastewater, design and build the infrastructure needed to carry out these tasks, and handle challenges that arise.

Our training opportunities take many forms, but all deliver high-quality content presented by knowledgeable speakers. We also work with the NCWPCSOCC (wastewater certification board) and the NCWTFOCB (water certification board) to pre-approve many events for CEUs, and then report attendance directly to these certification boards. In addition to outstanding content, our educational events also provide an opportunity for industry professionals to connect and share their experiences.

The most amazing thing about the training opportunities listed below, is that volunteers make them happen! NC AWWA-WEA volunteers are actively engaged in planning, moderating, and delivering all of our training programs. If you are interested in helping other water professionals advance their knowledge and skills, contact us online or call the NC AWWA-WEA office at (919) 784-9030 to find out how. Volunteers with all levels of experience and knowledge are welcome.

Multi-day events that have concurrent technical sessions as well as other events. Technical content is typically developed from an open call for abstracts or presentations. Our largest event of the year is our Annual Conference held in November and attracts over 1,100 water professionals from across the state. In the Spring, we typically host a smaller conference with a greater focus on operations personnel.

Schools & Certifications

These multi-day events are intended to prepare students for state certification exams. We currently hold 7 schools that offer preparation for Collections, Distribution, Backflow/Cross Connection, Meter Technician, Biological Wastewater, Physical/Chemical Wastewater, and Maintenance Technician.

NC AWWA-WEA sponsors the voluntary Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Certification Program. Although all wastewater laboratories are required to be certified by the State of North Carolina, this voluntary analyst program is a way for the individual laboratory analyst to prove their competence and increase their professional skills. Certification exams are typically offered twice per year.

The Academy for Water Professional Development

The Academy is an NC AWWA-WEA initiative designed to advance the careers of water professionals. Developed with input from North Carolina utility managers, The Academy includes multi-level technical and leadership development training courses, with emphasis on the most desired skill-set needed by upper-level employees. The Academy provides a structured and specialized training and certification program for water industry professionals to demonstrate competency at defined levels through the completion of courses and passing of comprehensive exams.

Visit The Academy page or a description of the program and a current list of events.

Seminars & Institutes

Seminars are one-day training events held at locations across the state and cover a variety of hot-topics developed by committees in our Technical Education Council.

To plan an Institute, we work with a utility or group to custom-design a day of training, and offer the presentation on-site at the utility or another agreed upon location. Most Institute attendees are from the host utility or group, but some seats are always reserved for open registration.

Visit the Seminars & Institutes page for a current list of events.

Other NC AWWA-WEA Opportunities

Professional Wastewater Operators Meetings

Members of the PWOC actively support the committee’s network of wastewater treatment plant operation, maintenance, laboratory, pretreatment, administrative, and other plant professionals. The PWOC divides the state into three regions – western, central and eastern – and holds a meeting in each section quarterly.

GROW Events
Growing Relationships and Opportunities through Water Resources or GROW aims to foster a sense of community among NC AWWA-WEA members through regional meetings with an informal setting. GROW events increase communication and coordination among water professionals regionally and across North Carolina, and introduce non-members to the benefits of membership. All meetings are open and everyone, from any part of North Carolina is invited to attend.
